Oregon Inlet Fishing Report May 19th, 2014
Many captains reported an uptick in yellowfin tuna activity and action which is great to see. As the charter boat Pelican puts it – its hard to decide what to do, do you run offshore and shoot for some yellowfin or sight cast for bruiser cobia. SO why not go for both. Was little breezy this morning but the wind laid out later in the morning for some good fishing. The charter Fishin Frenzy also came across some Orca’s and managed to shoot a quick video – see more down below. The Oregon Inlet fishing report from the charter Fishin Frenzy was more dealing with scattered grass and searching for the productive stretches. Their persistence paid off as the crew was able to hookup and land 4 of their 6 bites on nice yellowfin tuna. One of the coolest things the crew was able to see were a group of Orca’s offshore, and they were able to get a quick video. This isnt something you see everyday, check it out here (Orca’s off Oregon Inlet NC).
The Pelicans fishing report is great catches of yellowfin tuna and gaffer dolphin today. The weather, as reported, was supposed to be a bit “sporty” but it leveled out and the fishing was very good. The captain noted that it appears as if the yellowfin tuna bite has been improving and should remain a bit more consistent.
The Oregon Inlet fishing report for Point Runner is very much the same with some great catches of yellowfin tuna and gaffer sized mahi for their efforts. The Gulf Stream conditions were a bit rough and as with the past few days, the grass was pretty scattered. Point Runner had some nice yellowfin tuna and lost a shot at a nice bigeye tuna.
Dream Girl, fishing out of the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center had some great catches of tuna and rounding out the day was a really nice mako shark. The charter boat Skiligal had some choppy water to deal with but still had a solid catch of eight yellowfin tuna in the 30-45 pound range and 10 gaffer dolphin. The crew released a beautiful sailfish on 20 pound class tackle.
